Titusville Mayoral Race Erupts in Sign Controversy and Allegations of Election Misconduct

Andrew Connors Titusville Mayor

Titusville, FL —The 2024 Titusville mayoral race has entered a turbulent phase following a series of incidents involving campaign signage, law enforcement, and escalating accusations of voter deception and intimidation.

During early voting, unauthorized campaign signs appeared at the Titusville Public Library polling location depicting mayoral candidate Vickie Conklin alongside the Democratic Party logo. The signs were particularly confusing given that Conklin is registered as No Party Affiliation (NPA) and that Titusville’s municipal elections are officially nonpartisan. Compounding concerns, the signs used an image of Conklin without permission and misspelled her name, leading observers to initially suspect a prank.

Election officials ultimately removed the signs for violating Florida’s campaign disclosure requirements and for containing misleading information.

Surveillance Footage and Disclosure Concerns

The controversy deepened when surveillance footage from the following night allegedly showed mayoral candidate Andrew Connors and a campaign aide installing additional signs near the same polling location around midnight. A homeless veteran who witnessed the activity reported it to authorities, but officers reportedly declined involvement, citing campaign signage disputes as a civil matter.

Further inspection of the signs revealed faint, translucent lettering stating, “Paid for by Andrew Connors for Mayor.” The disclosure text measured less than one centimeter in height, below visibility standards, raising concerns that the disclaimer was intentionally obscured to mislead voters.

Jones condemned the tactic, stating, “Connors should be ashamed of himself. The City does not need that type of representation.”

Pattern of Escalation and Police Involvement

These incidents are not isolated. Earlier in the campaign, a Brevard County couple reported receiving a visit from law enforcement after posting a photo of Connors, originally shared from his own Facebook page, showing him appearing to smoke marijuana and drink from a keg. The visit by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office prompted the couple to raise concerns about potential violations of their constitutional rights.

Additional residents have reported tampering with Conklin campaign signs near U.S. Route 1, expressing fear that such actions are meant to intimidate voters. No arrests have been reported in connection with these claims.

Allegations of Improper Political Activity

Connors has also drawn scrutiny for appearing in campaign imagery alongside uniformed police officers and for a now-deleted video posted on the City of Titusville’s official YouTube channel in which the police chief expressed views on the mayoral race while in uniform. The video was removed following complaints alleging violations of Florida Statute 104.31, which restricts political activity by government officials using public resources.

Conklin publicly reaffirmed her support for law enforcement while criticizing what she described as the politicization of police authority—an issue that has unsettled many residents.

Policy Criticism and Campaign Conduct

Critics have also questioned Connors’ environmental messaging, particularly his late addition of “for clean water” to campaign materials while declining to commit to certifying the 2022 Right to Clean Water ballot initiative if elected. Environmental advocates argue that his campaign messaging has conflated drinking water safety with broader ecological concerns related to the Indian River Lagoon.

Connors has frequently skipped candidate forums, dismissing them on social media and citing reasons ranging from moderator bias to personal scheduling preferences. Community members have additionally expressed discomfort with his campaign appearances at child-centered events while avoiding structured forums aimed at engaging adult voters.

Social Media Harassment Allegations

Tensions have been further inflamed online by aggressive campaigning within local social media groups such as Talk of Titusville. Supporters aligned with Connors have been accused of relentlessly attacking Conklin, disparaging residents, and engaging in behavior described by critics as bullying. Some women in the community have raised concerns about misogynistic rhetoric and the candidate’s refusal to denounce a prominent supporter with a documented history of legal issues.

As election day approaches, many long-time residents describe the race as the most contentious in Titusville’s history, reflecting broader frustrations over rising taxes, environmental decline, crime, and declining trust in local government, sentiments echoed in the city’s 2024 Community Survey.

Charges Filed Amid Early Voting

In a final escalation, Connors filed charges accusing Conklin of removing campaign signage that allegedly violated election regulations. The Titusville Police Department confirmed an active investigation, and the affidavit was reportedly shared with media outlets just days before voters are set to decide the election.

The timing has sparked debate over due process and fairness, with some voters drawing comparisons to high-profile national political controversies and questioning whether legal mechanisms are being used as political tools.

Looking Ahead

As the mayoral contest nears its conclusion, voters are left weighing not only policy positions but also concerns about ethics, accountability, and the long-term consequences of increasingly aggressive campaign tactics. Many worry that such an atmosphere may deter qualified candidates from public service and further erode trust in local institutions.

As one resident, Daniel Lewis, summarized: “Everyone wants to win, but honorable people don’t cheat.”
